The world's first aluminum-ion solid-state battery is mass-produced, which is half cheaper than lithium batteries

Saturnose, an Asian battery research and development company, announced that it will publicly release independent test results of enhanced aluminum-ion batteries, and plans to launch solid-state rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries, which will be released as soon as next year. This may be the world's first mass-produced commercial-grade aluminum-ion solid-state battery, which is expected to replace the risky lithium-ion battery.

The world's first aluminum-ion solid-state battery is mass-produced, which is half cheaper than lithium batteries!

It is understood that the energy density of the aluminum ion battery is 1500Wh/L, which is expected to provide 600Wh/kg of energy. As a comparison, the energy density of lithium-ion batteries is 150-350Wh/kg, while the newly developed sodium ion of CATL is 70-200Wh/kg. The current commonly used lithium iron phosphate batteries are generally around 140Wh/kg, and some ternary lithium batteries can exceed 200Wh/kg. This means that once the aluminum-ion solid-state battery is successfully commercialized, the battery capacity can be increased by at least three times.

Saturnose said that a set of 15kW aluminum-ion solid-state batteries weighs 565kg, which can provide an electric vehicle with a cruising range of 1,200 kilometers and support 20,000 charge-discharge cycles. It can achieve a stable service life of up to 15 years in the car.

In addition, the production of aluminum-ion solid-state batteries does not use nickel and cobalt, and there are no lithium-ion dendrites and thermal runaway fire problems. The positive electrode of the battery system adopts a high-energy disordered rock salt structure, using aluminum, niobium and solid electrolyte. It is said that aluminum-ion solid-state batteries are 50% cheaper than lithium-ion battery technology and have advantages in terms of energy density, lifespan and safety.

From the data point of view, the aluminum-ion solid-state battery is indeed far from the lithium-ion battery in the supermarket, and it may really be expected to replace the lithium-ion battery. The potential of aluminum-ion batteries has also been repeatedly confirmed by the industry, but commercial trials have not yet been conducted. Whether the mass-produced products can achieve the expected results still needs to wait for follow-up announcements.

As countries around the world vigorously develop new energy industries, the supply of lithium batteries has been seriously in short supply. The prices of various raw materials for the production of lithium batteries have skyrocketed. Since the beginning of this year, the prices of raw materials such as lithium carbonate have increased by more than 230%. In the future, the demand for batteries from all walks of life will continue to increase. The current lithium-ion battery technology alone cannot meet the development needs of the industry.
